TO CREATE….susan painting after

Here’s some wonderful news about aging and creating. Involvement in fine arts and other creative activites has a scientifically proven link to staving off memory decline! That’s the best news I’ve heard yet!

CNN reporter Ashley Strickland writes, “Researchers discovered that people who engaged in artistic activities, such as painting, drawing and sculpting, in both middle and old age were 73% less likely to have memory and thinking problems, such as mild cognitive impairment, that lead to dementia.” The study was published by the American Academy of Neurology.

Not only that, science is paying more attention to the effects of creative activity on the brain and overall health. It’s very exciting to see new research studies exploring what the people who “do art” have been saying and experiencing for years.  Studies are confirming the positive effect of crafting and fine art on stress, depression, the immune system and retention of memory skills.

So get out your paint brush, or scissors, or scraps of fabric, or woodworking tools, and get to work! Or should I say, GO PLAY!

What is your story?  Do you know someone who is an artist or crafter who shows the truth in this research?
