Altered book by Virginia Beach artist Maggie Kerrigan

Every time I make a book sculpture, if the jacket isn’t used, I stash it on one of my storage shelves.  Maybe that comes from my teaching days–that feeling of never wanting to throw away things that might be useful someday.

After quite a few books, the spot on the shelf started to look like its own work of art.  So I decided to make a special piece out of the book jackets.

I love this.  It looks like the book is blooming, and it has that special meaning of representing three years of art that I’ve made from books.
