Ponder these partial lyrics from the song, “No Phone” by Cake. I’ve put in bold the lines that resonate most with me:

No phone, no phone.  I just want to be alone today.  No phone, no phone.

Ringing, stinging,  Jerking like a nervous birdno phone image

Rattling up against the cage

Calls to me throughout the day.

Rhyming, chiming,  Got me working all the time.

Gives me such a worried mind.

Never lets me get too deep

Summons me with just one beep.

The price we pay is steep.

Smooth contemplations will always be broken.

Deepest concerns will stay buried and unspoken.

No phone, no phone.  I just want to be alone today.

I think it’s true:  The price we pay is steep.

If we can’t get lost in our thoughts on a regular basis, what IS the price that we are paying?

Filling every moment with games, phone calls, checking texts or checking Facebook robs our subconscious minds of critical opportunities to work through a problem or solution. When we are at the beck and call of our phones, dropping everything and anything for the ping of an incoming text message or call, we risk interrupting our brains at the very moment that the subconscious is being accessed. The subconscious mind is very important for creative thinking.

If we want to have CREATIVE MINDS, we need to give ourselves mental space. Set boundaries that allow for the mind to wander. Allow our brains some quiet and even boredom.  What will you do today or this week to  give your brain more time to wander and “go deep?”

Leave a comment; I’d love to hear from you!  (and please forgive me if I don’t answer your  call!)
