Her Secret Life (using The Secret Life of Bees)
Over a year ago, I found a copy of The Secret Life of Bees and knew it would make a great substrate for an artwork. The question was, what to do with it?
The answer came to me as I listened to a friend tell me the story of how terribly her father had abused her in her childhood. Her own story mirrored that of that of the protagonist in the novel.
This artwork is dedicated to her and to the other 7 women I know who have suffered abuse either from a parent or a spouse.
There are 8 bees drawn into the beehive along with the initials of those 8 courageous women. Additionally I found 8 bees in the pages that I had removed from the book, and I believe those represent their ability to conquer their pasts and create the lives that they want and deserve.
Each of them has escaped from the hands of her abuser, but does anyone ever escape the abuse itself? This book sculpture is my prayer for them.
