The Art of Food is an exhibition at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. All the artworks feature luscious foods, such as oysters, avocado and rich desserts. All except mine.
My artwork, The Empty Chair, features lemons and salt. An empty plate. An overturned wine glass. A diminutive table and chair with a lit candle.
This artwork is a paper-cast version of the “missing man table” which is a military tribute to the MIA/POW service members who are not able to be present at military banquets and balls. Each item on the table has a meaning, including the sour taste of the lemon, the bitterness of the salt and the candle to help us keep the flame of memory alive. Three books were used: The Forgotten Soldier, Captive and One Soldier’s Story.
UPDATE: I’m sad to report that this exhibition has ended early and is no longer available for viewing.
