Water is nothing more than the reflection of the color near it. Removing the essence of one layer reveals not just another layer, and color, beneath. It allows a full picture to emerge. This artwork, made from the book, The Color of Water, seeks to transcend what the eye thinks it’s seeing. In his memoir, Black author James McBride also seeks to reveal the layers of his white mother and how her formidable personality shaped his childhood experience.
