We’ve just returned from a family vacation. It’s the first time in a long time that Don and I have gone overseas and the first stamp in the passports for the kids. I’m very proud of them for their willingness to try new things, whether it was an activity, asking a question in Spanish, or trying new foods.
Some people are naturally open to trying things that are different: new foods, movies and books from different genre, meeting people who are outside of their typical ring of friendship.
If that is you, then hooray! Embrace that and continue looking for more opportunities.
If that’s not you, well, no big deal either. The only drawback is that maybe you are missing something you might turn out to love. After all, how many people FINALLY try sushi and then realize they LOVE it? All four of us in our family have discovered that.
So my challenge to you this week is to step out of your comfort zone and try something that you have avoided before. Strike up a conversation with a person who, visually, does not fit the mold of a typical friend. Rent a movie outside of your typical style, a foreign film with subtitles, perhaps? If you are an artist, try a new medium or adopt a drastically different style for just one project.
Have some fun! Be mindful of what you are learning about yourself in the process.
What new thing can you try this week?
