I’ve run a few half marathons, but never in my life have I run more than a 13.1 miles.
Until the day I did.
That 13.1 was a serious limit. During training for each of those races, 10 miles was a challenge. Twelve miles was painful, and the 13.1 happened ONLY because of race day adrenalin. The idea of going out for a 14-mile training run was out of the question. The only problem was that it was necessary for the marathon training, so on Nov. 29th, I did it. Who knew?
That’s the thing about physical and mental limitations. They keep us locked into a specific reality until the day that we prove them wrong.
Oftentimes the “proving wrong” turns out to be a simple matter of gritting our teeth and pushing through, impulsively getting something done that has been nagging at us for a while.
Other times, it’s a very deliberate process of setting a goal and then biting off the obstacles, one at a time, until we find that we have gone well beyond what we thought we were capable of doing.
We can be fooled into believing our limitations…until the day we aren’t. There’s only one way to find out…try. What will you try?
